Yellowstone’s incredible 1903 Old Faithful Inn has endured many indignities. Of these two nearly sent the grand hotel to the great resort in the sky. First, in 1959, the Hebgen Lake earthquake sent the dining room fireplace crashing down & severely damaged the lobby fireplace & structural timberwork as well. Then, in 1988 the most serious threat to the hotel’s survival swept over the park. The North Fork Fire came within yards of the historic structure (it’s heat was so intense as to melt the tires off nearby cars). Thanks to an all out barrage by firefighters the Old Faithful Inn survived to be enjoyed by throngs of visitors today. Best part? That knobbly timber stair/ stair railing.
